Falling Stars Publishing

A studio for software and stories. We help organizations work out what to build, then turn them into reality.

Most of our clients are small organizations and the people who run them. We take on a few projects at a time and stay involved after launch.

How we work

We work the same way on client projects and on our own products.

  1. We write decisions down

Each decision is recorded with the reasoning behind it. If we change course later, the original record stays and is marked as replaced, so you can trace how the project got to where it is.

  2. We test where the work will be used

Before we call something finished, we check it on the devices and connections your users have, including phones and screen readers.

  3. We hand everything over

You get the logins, the documentation and a short guide for whoever looks after it next. Nothing should depend on us remembering how it works.

Advice, by enquiry

Sometimes the most useful thing is an outside view before anything more gets built.

We help organizations choose a technology direction, steady a delivery team that has lost its pace, and restart projects that have stalled. We start by listening. Then we write up what we found and what we'd recommend, and you can act on it with us or on your own.

We take on a limited amount of advisory work and agree the scope before we start.

Who leads the studio

Falling Stars Publishing is led by Evan Wee.

Evan has worked in software for nearly twenty years, as an engineer, a release and operations lead, and a director of engineering teams. His work has spanned insurance, healthcare, financial services, enterprise software, education and the public sector.

He holds current certifications in agile delivery and the major cloud platforms.

He is also the author of The Starlight Song Saga.

Where the name comes from

Falling Stars started as a pen name for stories about stars that sing.

The first software we released under it was a Garmin watch face with a small companion made of light via the in-house brand WISPWARE. The name has since grown to cover everything we make: watch faces, desktop tools, client work and books.

Working within real limits

Every project comes with constraints: budget, timeline, the people who will maintain it, and the devices it runs on. We design around them from the start.

We check assumptions early. If a decision depends on how something behaves, we test it before building on it.

We keep things as simple as the job allows, which makes the result easier to maintain and to change later.

Our own products

We also build and sell our own software. It's where we try new approaches before using them on client work.

Four are available on the Garmin Connect IQ store: Wellbeing, Run MAX, Run Casual and the Paces data field.
